Nine people held in custody
Nelson reporter
Nine of the 23 people arrested in co-ordinated drug raids on Nelson homes and premises early on Thursday morning were remanded in custody when they appeared in the District Court at Nelson before Messrs E. A. Highet and D. D. Merritt, Justices of the Peace, yesterday.
Ninety charges — most of them relating to the sale of cannabis to an undercover policeman to as far back as June of last year — were preferred against the 23 defendants. No pleas were taken and all the defendants were remanded to March 31.
Thirty-six of the .charges were laid indictably. Two of these referred to the possession of firearms — a shotgun and a .38 pistol — by two of those remanded in custody.
Two men faced 11 charges each.
Counsel for most of the nine people remanded in custody, sought bail but in each case this was refused after being strongly opposed by the police, represented by Sergeant P. D. Grooby.
