PA Dunedin The Otago University Students’ Association will not object to Prince Charles’s receiving an honorary degree. This was decided at a general meeting of the association held at the University Union on Tuesday. About 170 students attended the meeting, called to discuss a motion put forward by the information officer, Mr Reid Perkins. His motion said: “That the Otago University Students’ Association strongly objects to the arbitrary granting of an honorary degree to his Royal Highness Prince Charles.” When the motion was put to the meeting, 60 voted for it but 78 voted against.
The meeting closed with opposing factions shouting: “Three cheers for the Prince” and “T|tree cheers for Oliver Cromwell.”
