Three records at carnival

Three records were established al the first week-end of the Wharenui junior "Olympics," the biggest swimming carnival in New Zealand. The carnival caters for swimmers aged from undcr-15 to under eight years, and is regarded as a stepping stone to big agegroup carnivals such as the Speedo teleprinter finals and the New Zealand age-group championships. Entries for the carnival were

slightly down this year, because I here was not the usual representation from Otago and Eastern Districts. But the number of events remains the same — 179. many with heals — over two week-ends. Many young swimmers of potential first appear at the junior "Olympics.” One who emerged at the’week-end was Suzanne Fahey. She has swum seriously for only three weeks, but won the under eight years 33’,am freestyle. Only one of the records at the carnival was set by an individual.

Mepi Faoagali (Wharenui) recorded 49.3 s in the heats of the under-10 boys’ 66%m freestyle. The time took 1.4 s off the old mark set by Bryan Griffiths in 1974. The New Brighton under-12 girls freestyle 4x33*i>m relay team took I.ls off the old record held by Wharenui. The new time was Imin 26.25. The Wharenui A under-10 boys’ freestyle relay team recorded Imin 32.85. 5s faster than the old rec.ord, set by a Wharenui team 10 years ago. ’
