Finalists decided in women’s bowls

PA ■' Palmerston North Thelma Bainbridge of Auckland. and Ngaire McCunn, of Wellington, will meet in the Manawatu Women’s Bowling Centre’s- Broadlands invitation singles, final today. The final, originally set down for yesterday afternoon, had to be reallocated by the tournament organisers after heavy rain prevented play for much of the post-lunch session. The previously unbeaten Jean Ryan (Auckland) was beaten. 2114. by Mrs Bainbridge in their semi-final match. Blustery winds and showers had a noticeable effect on the players. Many heads were widely spread, and consistency with weight varied from one extreme to the other. In the other semi-final for the Broadlands Trophy. Mrs McCunn ‘

kept her unbeaten tournament record Intact when she comfortably scored a 21-12 win over the world champion singles bowler, Elsie Wilkie, of Waikato. Mabel Coveny (Wellington) and Jo Gifford (Wanganui) got their game in the plate semi-finals over before the rain set in, Ms Coveny eventually winning, 219. The other plate contest, between Judv Howat (Wellington) and Lex Kimber (Christchurch), was not so fortunate with the weather. Three times the players were forced from the greens, Mrs Howat leading, 20-16, after the twenty-sixth end. The organisers were forced to abandon the match after the onset of yet another heavy shower, and it will be completed this morning before the Broadlands final.
