Refinery averted?
Auckland The calling of a stop-work meeting of Marsden Point oil refinery operators today appears to have raised the possibility that a planned strike at the plant could be averted.
The meeting of about 60 operators was timed for 8 a.m., six hours after winding down the refinery was due to begin in preparation for a total shutdown today. The purpose of the meeting was a mystery to the New Zealand Refining Coms panv last evening, and to
the stationary engine drivers who are in dispute with the company over a pay reh. tivities claim.
The company’s personnel officer, Mr George Watt, could say only that permission for the stop-work meeting had been sought bv the operators yesterday and that it had been granted. The operators’ site delegate. Mr J. Smithson, said he did not know what would be discussed but it was ex. pected that secretary of the Engine Drivers’ Union,- Mr George Hogarth, would address the meeting.
