Assertions denied

PA Wellington Labour Party assertions that the Government had suggested tobacco growers plant boysenberries or kiwifruit have been denied by the Acting Minister of Trade and Industry (Mr Quigley).

He also denied an assertion by the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Rowling) that tobacco growers had been told to plough up their tobacco.

As part of the Government’s re-organisation of the tobacco growing industry growers who wished to go out of that industry, either wholly or partly, were offered adjustment assistance of $7OOO per qualifying licensed hectare given up, Mr Quigley said. “Whether a grower uses this assistance to plant boysenberries, kiwifruit or some other crop is entirely over to that grower. No direction has or will be given by the Government on this,” Mr, Quigley said.
