Five centuries in lower grades
Five centuries, two in the same eight-grade match, and some startling bowling analyses provided the highlights of Canterbury Cricket Association lower-grade cricket at the week-end. Marty Fizsimons, for Sydenham B, and the Lancaster Park player, Peter Smith, both reached three figures in their match. Fitzsimons, also a Canterbury representative hockey goalie, made 120 not out for the victorious Sydenham team, but Smith fought a lone and hopeless battle for his side, his 108 not out, in a team total of 163 — including 24 extras — was peppered with boundaries: five sizes and lb fours. ' ' • Three of the other centuries were scored by players long prominent in Canterbury cricket. Derek Banks got 106 for Old Collegains’ President’s grade team against St Albans; Richard Bromley also scored an Old Collegains century, in fifth grade; and Robin Hickford made 101 for Busnide-West in the fourth grade. Also, W. Higgins made 131 in an all-Sydenham second-grade match. Peter Foster took the bovilng honours with his exceptional nine for 18 for Lancaster Park against Christ’s College in the third grade, while the second highest : wicket-taker-was Graeme Dense’m, long a successful bowler for. East-Shirley; in the sixth grade. He had- eight for 41 agaiiisf Old "Collegains. Keith Hartshorne, one of the few bowlers of ■ “Chinamen” in club cricket, and Chambers of St Bede’s, both had seven wickets, but for economy it was hard to go past two in the lower grades.
