Special Correspondent Auckland The time returned by Pays Anne in the Air New Zealand Stakes was a race record and specially’ notable considering the distance is a mile and a quarter rather than 2000 m. While other starting points at Ellerslie were moved, forward on the introduction- of metrics the miie-and-a-quarter was retained to allow ready shifting of the starting gates from the track. Consequently, while advertised as .-“about 2000 m” such races at Ellerslie are in, fact just on 2012 m. . ' i-' -. Pays Anne returned 2min:2.sf>s just; a fraction inside the pre. vious best for the race. Balmerino’s 2min:2.74s in 1977, the first year of the Air New Zcaland Stakes.
