Geriatric unit plans get nod
The North Canterbury Hospital Board has been authorised to prepare definite sketch plans and an assessment of costs for a geriatric day-care unit at Princess Margaret Hospital. The initial plans were prepared more than three years ago for the 30-place unit, which will be built next to the existing geriatric assessment and occupational therapy unit at the hospital. The new day-care unit to which the board has given high priority in this year’s building programme will be open five days a week. Patients will be provided
with transport to and from the unit if required. Most patients will be discharged after spending between six weeks and two months at the unit, with attendance of between two and three days each week. Announcing the authorisation, the Minister of Health (Mr Gair) said that the proposed unit would provide special rehabilitation and social services which would enable some elderly patients to remain in their own homes, instead of being admitted to long-term geriatric hospital accommodation.
