N.Z. soldiers missing
! NZPA-Reuter Manila Two New Zealand soldiers are missing, presumed drown-, ed. after a United States transport aircraft crashed into the South China Sea soon after take-off from the United States Subic base in the Philippines yesterday. Sixteen persons aboard the Cl3O military transport were confirmed dead. One survived and there were seven missing a United States Navy spokesiman said. | New Zealand Defence headquarters in Wellington namled the two missing New Zealand soldiers as:
f Warrant Officer R. D. Hayward, and Sergeant D. M. Terry. Both are of Papakura, and both are married. ... .... The Hercules was carrying United States, Philippines, Australian, and New Zealand personnel on a joint exercise in the area, the spokesman said. United States naval vessels and helicopters were searching the area for survivors. The strategic Subic base is a centre for United States operations throughout the Pacific and South China Sea. The exercise was one involving amphibian craft.
