Strike at Kaiapoi works
Meat workers at the N.F.C.; Kaiapoi freezing works went! on strike yesterday. Stock! had to be returned to farms: when the workers went home: about J p.m. The general manager of, the works. Mr K. Pearce.: said that the dispute arose, over demands by freezer; hands that two extra hands: be engaged to allow more: “warm-up” time. The award provides for 15 minutes’ “warm-up” time every hour when hands are stacking: frozen meat in the freezing’ chambers. The freezer hands wanted! to have an extra five minutes; progressively in addition to i the 15 minutes. When the! company declined, the: freezer hands imposed an j overtime ban and the com-J pany deemed them to be oni strike. A combined meeting;! was held and the other meat! workers decided to support: the freezer hands. | Mr Pearce said that freezer hands customarily worked overtime and often worked I long hours on semi-contract, earning SIOOO a week gross or more. '
