East Shirley, St Albans share top place in twilight cricket competition
Bast-Shirley’s record in the senior cricket competition this season has been disappointing, but it has been a different story •when limited over matches are involved. Earlier in the season, East-Shir-ley won the Sydenham six-a-side tournament and on Monday evening it had its first win in. “The Press” sponsored twilight tournament. St Albans trailed East-Shirley by four points entering the final round and had a good chance of winning should East-Shirley lose to Riccarton and St Albans beat Lancaster Park. However, East-Shirley cruised to an easy win and St Albans was well beaten by Park, leaving East-Shirley 10 points ahead. After restricting Riccarton to 83 from 21 overs on a grass pitch, East-Shirley lost an early wicket through a run out, but Steve Booth, George Harper and Howard Morel batted most sensibly, all retiring after making 35. Morel was most impressive, hit-
■ting three sixes over the bowler’s head. Greg Pierce and Alan Lindsay bolstered Lancaster Park’s total with a good stand and the score of 158 proved too much for St Albans, which lost three quick wickets. Rod Moore and Andy Nuttall both had to retire but there was little other substance to the batting. The women’s competition had a close finish, St Albans taking the first prize by a point over Riccarton, even though Riccarton downed St Albans comfortably in the final round. The Cedarwood “player of the match” awards were won by Alan Lindsay (Lancaster Park), Bob Masefield (North Canterbury), David Farrant (BurnsideWest University), Ross Cameron (High School Old Boys). Howard Morel (East-Shirley), Wayne Higgins (Supporters’), Nicki Turner (Sydenham) and Sue Rattray (Riccarton). Morel and Turner received the Lion Breweries “players of the day’.’ awards.
