Lambert tries again

PA Wellington The former All Black prop Kjnt Lambert is seeking reinstatement to rugby as a coach after his decision to transfer to rugby league four years ago. His second application to the New Zealand Rugby Union for reinstatement has been held over pending further information from his union Manawatu.

Lambert, who turns 29 next month, said he was hopeful of better things after his first application was turned down 20 months ago. “I only want to come back to rugby for coaching purposes,’ he said yesterday. “I’m really very keen to help the younger players in particular , “There is no way I could or would play again, for the leg injury I suffered in Australia just wouldn’t stand up to it.”

After playing the first and last tests against the touring British Isles team in 1977, Lambert announced his decision to swap codes, and he moved to Sydney to play league for the Penrith club. The veteran of 139 first class rugby matches in his career, Lambert played 40 times for his country, and 50 times for Manawatu with another for the combined “Manawhenua” side against the 1977 Lions.

A past Maori All-Black, New Zealand Universities representative, New Zealand colt and junior All Black Lambert feels he still has plenty to offer rugby union as a coach.
