Selectors drop Milburn

PA Dunedin Barry Milburn has been discarded by the Otago cricket selectors for the Indian match starting on Saturday, in spite of a successful Shell season with the bat and behind the stumps. Milbum, who was brought back into the Otago team this season after seven years out of first-class cricket, has been dropped in favour of Warren Lees. Lee’s wicket keeping reputation suffered in Australia, and he has lost his New Zealand test place to lan Smith.

Milbum was highly regarded this season, and his ability to stand up behind the stumps to the mediumpace bowlers has worried opposing batsmen. He combined particularly well with Brian McKechnie and Derek Walker in this respect. He made 26 dismissals (20 catches and six stumpings) during the season. Milburn, little regarded for his batting ability until this season, surprised his critics by scoring a century in Otago’s first game, against Wellington. “We are just sorry there

is not a place for Barry,” said Warren Shirley, the convener of the Otago selection panel. “He has been a 100 per cent team man during the season, and has never given his wicket Lees has been favoured as captain ahead of lan Rutherford and Brian McKechnie. The team is: Warren Lees (captaint. lan. Rutherford, Geoff Blakely, Richard Hoskin, Wayne Blair, Bruce Blair, Garth Dawson, Stephen Boock, John Bracewell, Lance Cairns, Brian McKechnie, Derek Walker.
