Vietnamese refugees en route today
NZPA Kuala Lumpur Another 101 Vietnamese refugees will be flown to Wellington from Malaysia today for resettlement in various parts of New Zealand. '■ A New Zealand High Commission spokesman said yesterday - that the Government had agreed to accept 1000 refugees from the region for the period from January 1 this year to June 30- next year. New Zealand had resettled 3391 refugees from the region, including 1211 from Malaysia, to the end of last vear.
New Zealand was thus ahead of the internationally agreed target of one refugee for every 1000 population. On the latest batch of refugees, the spokesman said that very few of them had close relatives’in New Zealand and there- was a high proportion of single males. There were also 47 children. M o s t resettlement countries normally prefer to take in those with close relatives and single females. The Vietnamese refugees would be sent to a training area for English language and orientation . courses before being resettled, the spokesman said.
