The economy

Sir, —It seeems that the Prime Minister, Mr Muldoon, still wants to "think big” for

our national development strategy, ("The Press,” February 9). It is increasingly obvious that he and his Government are incapable of thinking at all, let alone devising solutions to inflation and unemployment (now estimated at nearly 70,000 people). In a world of finite resources,' it is suicide to advocate an energy and capital intensive programme of industrialisation. Instead, we should be encouraging a diversity of small and me-dium-scale enterprises, based on sustainable supplies of renewable energy and a high labour input. A recent survey showed that a significant proportion of the public have rejected “Think Big.” In an election year, discerning New Zealanders will reject the government that goes with it. — Yours, etc., K. E. CRONIN. February 10, 1981.
