East German soccer players arrested
NZPA-Reuter Bonn Three East German soc,cer players were arrested at East Berlin’s Schoenefeld Airport as the national squad was about to leave on a Latin American tour, the West German newspaper “Die Welt” has reported. The newspaper said that Gerhard Weber, Mathias Mueller, and Peter Kotte, all from the Dynamo Dresden Club, were taken from the departure lounge, apparently by State security agents. The three, players did not arrive in Argentina with the squad, it said. East Germany’s official A.D.N. news agency leported the team s depar-.
ture on. January 30. East German newspapers have given unusually little coverage of t’|; tour, and the three players have not been mentioned. “Die Welt” quoted unofficial sources in East Berlin for the report. ’ Many West Germans and West Berliners take holiday flights from Schoenefeld, and use the same departure lounge. Dynamo Dresden told “Die Welt” that it was r<ot allovyed to comment on the incident, but an East German Sports Federation spokesman told the newspaper that it involved “a continuing investigation which has not yet b en concluded.”
