The Depart- - ment of Justice has a major role in adjusting a large body of law (including the common law) to the needs of a changing society. The main duties of the Chief Legal Adviser are to advise the Minister and Secretary for Justice on policyissues associated with the [legislative programme, with recommendations of law reform committees, and with law reform committee programmes. The Chief Legal Adviser is required to ensure that annual legislative programmes are completed in full including co-ordinetion with the Chief Parliamentary Counsel and appearances before Parliamentary Select Committees, Cabinet Committees and Caucus Committees. The appointee would be required to act as legal adviser . to the Secretary for Justice and. various divisions of the department.
