George Robert Dudley, aged 40, an invalid beneficiary, pleaded guilty to the charge and was fined $l5O and disqualified from driving for six months by Judge Kearney. The prosecutor for the Ministry of Transport, Sergeant I. James, -said Dudley’s blood-alcohol reading was 137 m of alcohol per millilitre of blood (80mg is the maximum allowed), A duty solicitor said Dudley had been a paraplegic for 15 years, He had bought his car with the help of the Government assistance scheme for disabled people and it had been adapted for his use. On December 1, 1979, when the blood sample was taken he had drunk a bottle of beer at his home and was returning from taking a friend home. The duty solicitor said Dudley was taking tablets for his disability which may have reacted badly with alcohol.
