National chess

The defeat of a member of the New Zealand world championship team, Vernon Small, of Christchurch, was the main surprise on the opening -day of the national chess championships at Lincoln College yesterday. Small, one of three players who shared the championship last vear, was beaten by Keas Dekker (North' Shore). Three other matches ended in draws, the most interesting being the one between the other two joint holders, Ortvin Sarapu.
