Road behaviour ‘fairly good’ over holidays

Traffic officers have experienced “no real prob® lems” with motorists driving in and out of Christchurch during the last two days. A spokesman for the Ministry of Transport said that apart from yesterday afternoon when traffic on the Main South Road between Christchurch and. Ashburton was extremely heavy, road behaviour had been fairly good. He said the build-up on the Main South Road was caused by the Ashburton racemeeting but by 7.30 p.m. this had dwindled and traffic was only light. i

A recurring problem while traffic was heavy, he said, was that vehicles were travelling too fait when almost bumper to bumper. He also appealed to motorists towing caravans to pull over to the side. of the road occasionally, especially when there appeared to be a line of cars building up behind.

The department was not plagued with drinking drivers over the last, three days. Only three drivers have been caught in the last 48 hours. - '

A spokesman said Christmas Day was fairly quiet and that while it was busier yesterdav, the Christchurch staff had had to deal only with minor problems.
