“Animal Charter”
Sir, — Mike Moore, member of Parliament, is to be congratulated on his preparation of an “Animal Charter” which in brief, is proposed legislation designed to protect the rights of animals. Many in our society are justifiably con-, cerned about the suffering of millions of human beings, but why is the right to a life free from suffering and pain, a right to be enjoyed by mankind only? The treatment of animals, like that of human beings, should not be a political issue, but a moral one; one which concerns all political entities. The useless platitude, “poor things” is not good enough. Mr Moore is not prepared to accept it and I wish him well in his efforts. His efforts, and those like his, must succeed if posterity is to look back, and not down, on us. — Yours, etc., C. J. NOKES. November 24, 1980.
