‘Ripper’ call brings jail term
NZPA Manchester An unemployed labourer who posed as the “Yorkshire Ripper” and threatened to strike again in Leeds was yesterday jailed for three months by Manchester city magistrates. The court heard that Steven Eric Bainbridge claimed to be the “Ripper” in a luentime telephone call to the “Daily Mirror” offices in Manchester. Although only 23 words were spoken to a telephonist, they were taped and Post Office engineers traced the call to. Bainbridge’s home. The prosecutor said that Bainbridge made the call because he was seeking publicity and was bored.
