Insurance Council picketed

A picket was mounted outside the office of the Insurance Council in Hereford Street yesterday by members of the executive of the Christchurch branch of the Insurance Workers’ Union. The picket was organised at lunch-time to publicise a dispute between the union and the insurance companies over the ■ breakdown of award talks. Union members in Christchurch went on strike last Friday and from yesterday put a ban on hand deliveries of documents from insurance companies to the Insurance Council, and on hand deliveries between companies. The South Island field officer of the union, Mr A. M. Pringle, said the union’s argument was not with individual companies but with the hard-line attitude of the employing companies generally. The main issues at stake are a claim for a new technology clause, margins for skills, and the wage claim of 13.75 per cent, as against the employers’ offer of 13.5 per cent.
