Halal men for N.Z.

PA Wellington Twenty-one halal slaughtermen have left Iran to come to New Zealand for the killing season. The Freezing Companies’ Association originally wanted 30 Iranian slaughter, men but difficulties caused by the Iraq-Iran war prevented it from getting them all. “The war has caused some problems in . making all the necessary arrangements. Some of the men were eligible for military service and clearance had to be obtained for them,” said Mr D. Heynes, of the association.

Nine of the men worked in New Zealand last season, the first time halal slaughtermen were employed here, as a result of Iranian insistence that lambs for their market be slaughtered according to Islamic ritual.

Erom Christchurch the men will be taken to freezing works in various parts of the country, where they are due to start work next week. They will return to Iran at the end of the season, between April and June next year.

Twenty-one of the 40 freezing works in New Zealand will employ halal slaughtermen this season. Altogether, about 70 slaughtermen have been hired, including about 20 from Fiji and 30 from within New Zealand.
