Springbok tour
Sir, — In my recent letter I expressed approval for Graham Mourie’s stand; some of my closest friends disagree with m" on the ground that politics should not be allowed to interfere with' sport. I agree: sport in its own way is doing much especially within South Africa to discredit apartheid. As Colin Bryden, of the “Rand Daily Mail” has written, there has been “. . . a substantial advance from the dark days of 1965 when the Prime Minister, Hendrik Verwoerd, announced that Maoris would not be welcome in an All Black touring team.” It is foolish how-
ever to ignore the solemn agreement entered into at Gleneagles. I think it wrong that advantage should be taken of our Government’s unwillingness to enforce its view by dictatorial means and .1 sincerely hope that if the tour does go ahead no misguided individuals will seek to enforce theirs by despicable hooligan tactics. — Yours, etc., TED REA.
