New refuse chairman
A new Labour member of the Christchurch City Council has been elected chairman of the Metropolitan Refuse Disposal Committee: Cr A. H. Clark will succeed the committee’s former chairman, . . Mr. J. M, McKenzie,' who stood down at the local-body elections. Cr Clark beat Cr R. S. Lester, a long standing member of the refuse committee, in a five-three vote for the chairmanship. ■
Cr D. C. Close, another Christchurch City repre-
sentative, nominated Cr Clark. The nomination was seconded by Cr A. A Adcock, of the Waimairi County Council. - Cr Lester had the support of the twb other committed members, who were on the body before .the elections Crs E. C. Britnell (Riccarton Borough) -and I, G. Clark (Waimairi). ! ’'; ~ Cr Adcock was elected deputy chairman.,: ahead of Cr Britnell on. a four-three vote. ... •. ■ .
The new appointments reflect the shift in direction in
committee policies," as indicated by decisions taken at yesterday’s meeting. Cr Clark referred to a “tide of change” in Christchurch towards recycling refuse. Christchurch had lagged behind, and the committee would Jjave to come to grips- with the issue in the next • three years, he said. Cr Clark assured the committee that the Christchurch City Council was determined to co-operate with other local bodies associated with the re ; fuse scheme. ■
