Employers’ role ‘confused’

PA Wellington The role of employers has become confused, according to the executive director of the Employers’ Federation, Mr J. W. Rowe. He told Palmerston North Rotarians that people knew employers were there to provide jobs, but if they made a profit it was thought to be bad. “It is a myth of our times that the cake is infinitely divisible. Unions have an important part to play in negotiating wages, conditions of employment, and so on,” Mr Rowe said. “Unfortunately, the temptation to speed up the negotiation process by direct action if often irrestible. The results do nothing for the size of the cake.” Mr Rowe said that New Zealand had to adapt to new technology in order to compete with other countries.
