Totem pole returns
Christchurch’s Oregon Indian totem pole has had a face-lift and will be re-erec-ted this morning on a new site at Christchurch Airport. The totem pole, a 1960 gift from the Oregon Centennial Commission in return for hospitality shown to the. United States Antarctic sup-1
- port force staff, was removed ( from its previous site at Little Hagley Park in May last year. ’ The pole was dismantled , after complaints that it caused a traffic hazard when motorists slowed or stopped to look at it. It was also criti-l cised as being inappropriate' Jin park designed by English! j settlers.'
