Storemen and packers In Canterbury have voted overwhelmingly in support of the Canterbury and Westland Storemen and Packers’ Union joining' the proposed Distribution Workers’ Federation.
The Christchurch members voted in meetings, on Wednesday and yesterday, and the combined vote was 373 to 54. The union’s secretary (Mr P. E. Piesse) said that members in other Canterbury centres also voted for the proposal. The union has 1966 members.
Mr Piesse. saidthat attendance at the meetings could have been better, but he was pleased that the decision was carried by a big majority. Those who voted represented a fair cross-section of the membership. Shop employees and drivers are also holding ballots on whether to join the federation, which is an extension of an existing arrangement of shared Centra! office and advocacy facilities.
