Child care
Sir, — I should like to suggest to your correspondent Mrs Crawford (October 20) that Dr Wall’s. opinion about child care centres being used as •‘dumping grounds” was more motivated by political concern about male unemployment than by concern for the psychological health and needs of children and mothers. Must we repeat until blue in the face that day care centres are set up to assist and complement good quality parent care, not to take its place? Mrs Crawford should turn to page 30 of the same issue of “The Press” in which her letter appears, and read under “Child mis-
treated.” There are two- reasons why this would not have happened if there had been a day care centre in the picture. First, centres are in touch with, health and welfare authorities; second, the mother-child relationship would not reach such a crisis, because of the relief and support provided. —
Yours, etc., B. P. LILBURN. October 20, 1980.
