Capitalism and socialism

Sir, — Some correspondents to this column write negatively about capitalism, but obviously do not understand what is actually represented by this term. The philosophy: of capitalism is buUt on freedom and ethics; there is a clear distinction between right and wrong, with a moral code and laws built on that. The elected Government acts purely as a policeman to uphold freedom and justice, and respect for the basic rights of individuals is essential. So to point to the United States with its huge Government bureaucracy stealing from the people, its gigantic coercive monopolies, supprftsiiwE

laws and restrictions, and ravaging of the environment and call that capitalism is a lie. The United States came close to true capitalism but has been crippled by altruism, the New Deal and the welfare state. Socialism is the cause of all its problems and socialists have engaged in a blackening of capitalism to hide .their ruination of the West. Yours, etc.,.
