Schoolboy holds police at bay
PA New Plymouth A large area of Vogeltown, New Plymouth, was evacuated yesterday when a schoolboy armed with a .22 rifle held policemen at bay for more than an hour. A number of shots were fired bv the boy during the siege of a house in the suburb, but nobody was injured. Carrington Street, one of New Plymouth's main road links, was closed near its intersection with Huatoki Street. The police had a number of calls from people checking the safety of relatives in the area.
The drama began at 10.50 a.m. with a 111 call to the police and ended at 12.20 p.m when the boy was apprehended. The police were advised there was trouble inside a Carrington Street house. A constable walked up a long driveway to the house and was met by the boy with the rifle who told him to move ° U The area was cordoned and 50 houses and several shops were evacuated.
Soon after the evacuation five shots were fired and a fowl was killed. The boy then threatened to shoot the police and a further three to four shots were fired, apparently indiscriminately. At the height of the siege the armed offenders squad, 30 policemen, and five traffic officers were involved, and imore police were on their way from Wanganui and Palmerston North. The the boy was under 14, no charge would be laid, a police spokesman said.
