Thomson hopeful

PA Wellington The New Zealand jockey, Brent Thomson, is hopeful, rather than confident, that he will be fit to ride in the major events during the forthcoming Melbourne Cup carnival. Speaking from his Melbourne home on Tuesday, Thomson said his injured ankle was still sore and swollen. However, he is receiving daily treatment and the injury is slowly healing. He suffered a fracture of a bone in his right ankle when he fell from a young horse at Caulfield on October 11 after passing the winning post. "I’ll have to start riding work again next Monday and see how it is then,” he said. “It will probably be some time next week before I will be able to make a definite decision one way or the other.

“If the ankle comes right in time I will ride Our Paddy Boy in the Derby (November 1) and Yashmak in the Cup. "If it is not right next week then I’ll just have to sit out the carnival,’’ he said.
