Strong cricket criticism
Strong criticism of cricket clubs which field players under incorrect names was voiced .at last evening’s meeting of the Canterbury Cricket Association’s management committee.
As a result, the Lancaster Park ninth grade A side Was severely reprimanded and lost the points from its match last week-end for playing a former second grade player under an assumed name. In the match. Park beat EastShirley. The convener of the competitions sub-committee (Mr N. G. Ockwell) pointed out this was the third successive year a team had infringed In this manner, and described it as ‘‘sheer stupidity.” ’•
He said the loss of points was a more effective deterrent than fining clubs. “It is a pity to see this sort of tiling happening and it shows a lack of consideration,” he said.
Mr Ockwell recommended that Park lose the five points from last Saturday’s match and also lose another five points. How-
ever. Mr R. Howard made an amendment, removing the additional five point penalty, and this was carried by a vote of 13-7.
