Increase in armed robberies

PA Wellington The Commissioner of Police (Mr R. J. Walton) yesterday expressed concern about the increase in armed robberies throughout New Zealand.

He said there were 30 aggravated robberies in which firearms were used in the first six months of this .year, compared with nine in the first six months of last year. “In spite of the good detection rate, the near-cer-tainty of detection no longer seems to be a strong enough deterrent,” he said.

“We see an increasing readiness on the part of robbers to carry arms. People responsible for security of cash must take greater care.”
