Weather affects cricket in suburbs
With the exception of the senior A grade, ail cricket in the Christchurch Suburban Cricket Association’s cc'iu>etitlons was cancelled because of poor weather on Saturday. Play started on time at Edgar Macintosh Park where MerivalePapanul won the toss and sent Harewood into bat. After being 60 for three early. Harewood settled down and totalled a very good 250. Graham Gadsby. lan Ward and Tony Fleete all featuring in the feast of runs. The best of the Merivaie-Papanui Bowlers was Andrew Murray. Play finished 10 minutes early because of bad light at which stage the home side was 58 without loss. Tlte not out batsmen were Ross Murdoch and Kevin Smith. Southern Districts made the most of the first use of the wicket at Beckenham Park and in its total of 193, Karl Slave batted well, while Alan Gibson and Kevin Parker were also among the runs. . Two Belfast bowlers shared the honours between them. John Blance took five for 53 while Peter Steere finished with three for 23. In reply, Belfast had lost only one wicket. In a dull and dreary game at Hoon Hay Park, the home side failed miserably to be 81 for eight before declaring its innings closed. The Upper Riccarton bowlers to succeed were Mike Walsh, Dave Kennedy and Nicky Dierck. , , „ The rate of scoring in Upper Rlccarton’s first innings was also at a snail’s pace and when stumps were drawn, 57 runs were on the board with three batsmen back in the dressing room. Jim Bennie had taken two of the wickets. At Garrick Park, play did not start till about 130 p.m. becausl. of heavy rain. Batting first, Woolston W.M.C. began wef. with Bob Kerr reaching 45 anx :Ken Bowley 32. Alan Hounsell j and Tony McKendry both bowled well to take three wickets each, !
