Fishing moratorium

PA Wellington A moratorium on the . issue of commercial fishing permits in the Hauraki Gulf has been gazetted. The moratorium, effective from October 3, was the first step towards establishing a controlled fishery in the gulf, said the Minister of Fisheries (Mr Maclntyre).

The Government was moving towards a new management plan for the gulf, the aim of which was to ensure conservation and protection of the fisheries resource, while at the same time providing sustained economic prosperity for commercial fishermen, he said.
