Napier hit by ’quakes
PA Napier Napier and surrounding districts were rocked early yesterday morning by a series of earthquakes. The tremors hit the area in three jolts, starting at 8.30 a.m. These were later measured at 5.5 on the Richter scale. In spite of the intensity of the earthquake, there were no injuries and Hawke’s Bay appeared to escape with only superficial damage. Most' of the damage occurred in the business area of Napier. Windows shattered and the floors of shops were littered with merdhandise which had fallen from display fixtures. Chimneys fell in residential areas and power was cut in several suburbs. In Hastings, gift shops and food stores lost items off their shelves. One Hastings gift shop had china figurines and other goods broken.
