Trip for Murtagh
John Murtagh, of Taranaki, has been chosen to represent New Zealand at the Embassy world indoor bowls singles tournament in Coatbridge, near Glasgow, from January 24 to March 1 next year. . The tournament is of the British indoor variety: bowlers best known for their outdoor achievements competing with full-sized bowls in a large matted stadium. This will be the third time that New - Zealand has been "represented. George Alley (Auckland) took part in 1978 and John Mears (Marlborough) last year, neither of whom was placed.
The trip is some compensation for the 40-year-old Murtagh, who has been unlucky more than once to miss selection in .New Zealand bowls- teams going overseas.
He finally won full national selection last summer, for the home series against Australia, after winning the New Zealand singles title. This was his fourth national title and he is one of thefew men to have taken the singles, pairs and fours. Murtagh’s selection was announced yesterday by the convener of the national panel, Mr Dave Martin, of Christchurch.
