Lamb shipped
PA Wellington New Zealand lamb will still be shipped to Iraq in spite of reports that Iran is refusing to allow ships to get there. A shipment of 1850 tonnes of lamb is now on its way Ito Iraq and a similar tonnage is being loaded for Basra next week. The sales manager of the exporter, W. and R. Fletcher (N.Z.), Ltd, Mr Bruce Bishop, said yesterday that he considered reports of Iranian threats against shipping to be exaggerated.
“We have heard nothing definite from the shipping compafties about this,” he said. Between July and December, W. and R. Fletcher has scheduled 9000 tonnes of lamb to go to Iraq. Next year, 30,000 tonnes of lamb valued at $7O million is scheduled to go there under an agreement in Wellington on Monday. The port through which New Zealand lamb goes to Iran is Bandar Khomeiny, which is not near the fighting.
