“Red turn” at lights
Sir, — The doubtful benefits of "red turns” at traffic lights (“The Press,” September 19) must be weighed against the dangers to pedestrians. A significant percentage of Christchurch drivers interpret "compulsory stop” as "slow down to lOkm/hour.” How much fuel must be saved to justify the broken limbs that will be the probable result? It would be of considerable interest to this city’s pedestrians if the. three mayoral candidates expressed their opinion of this. scheme. — Yours, etc., ' R. F. BROWNE. ■ September 19, 1980.
