Mamola beats Sheene

NZPA-Reuter Mallony Park, England Randy Mamola, the 20-year-old American motorcycling star, held off a challenge by Britain’s Barry Sheene to win the “Race of the Year” for machines of up to 750 c.c. at Mallony Park, yesterday. Riding a Suzuki, Mamola covered the 87. kilometres course in 32 minutes 54.0 seconds at an average speed of 158.48 km/h.

Kenny Roberts (U.S.), the World 500 c.c. champion, took the lead in the early stages of the race on his Yamaha, and after 27 of the 40 laps he and Mamola had opened up a clear lead. Then Roberts was forced to retire with mechanical problems.Sheene, riding a Yamaha, chased Mamola for the rest of the race, but could not catch him.
