Renford loses title
NZPA Dover Australia’s swimming grandfather, Des Renford, yesterday surrendered his “King of the Channel” title when England’s Mike Read completed a record twentieth crossing. Read landed on the French coast early yesterday after a 15-hour swim from Dover, which he began on Saturday morning. It was his third crossing this year.
Previously both Renford, aged 53, and Read, aged 39. had completed the swim 19 times each. Renford new savs he has retired. Belinda Shields, a 23-year-old hairdresser from Auckland. ser off at the same time as Read and beat him to France bv six hours. Miss Shields completed the crossing in just over nine hours. Three other British swimmers gave up their attempts.
