Statements on tip — or blockade

Unless both Christchurch Mayoral candidates make statements about an alternative rubbish dump site within a week, the Bexley Landfill Action Committee will take “direct action" — a blockade — at the Bexley tip. A committee meeting on iWednesday endorsed the (blockade ’ plan announced earlier, but decided to give both Mr Hamish Hay and Cr Mollie Clark “reasonable time” to make statements before any action. “By reasonable time we one hour before the action takes place,” said Mr Foley, mean within a few days, certainly within a week,” said the Committee’s chairman, Mr A. J. R. Foley. The committee was prepared to resume discussion with the council if it honoured an original reassurance that, there would bs no more dumping north of the Estuary drain. “Plans for a blockade have been made and can be brought into force at very short notice.
