Former Kumara mayor dead
PA Greymouth A former Mayor of Kumara, William Harold Gardiner . Stewart, died in Greymouth on Wednesday night. He was aged 87. Mr Stewart was Mayor of Kumara for nearly 25 years until the town became part of Westland County on April 1, 1969. He then represented the north riding on the county council until 1977. -■ The William Stewart bridge, under construction across the Taramakau River near Kumara, has been named after Mr Stewart. He was widely known as the long-serving president and champion of the Kumara Racing Club, which reelected him for his thirtyseventh consecutive term as president last month.
