Amalgamation
Sir, — I read with interest of a report prepared by the Heathcote County Council, apparently confirming that they still feel themselves committed to amalgamation with Mount Herbert County (August 29). Perhaps obsession has blinded their chairperson, IMr J. M. McKenzie, and some of his councillors. They seriously imagine that Mount Herbert or any other Peninsula county would willingly actept amalgamation and become part of- their empire building —- for there is no logic to the move. Will their report tell of the recent survey conducted in Mount Herbert ' County showing the"vast majority of residents to be against amalgamation with Heathcote? After the October local body elections, do they really expect to woo a Mount Herbert Council elected on the basis of their opposition to this amalgamation issue? Let Heathcote County bulldoze its way into a greater Christchurch where it belongs. — Yours, etc., R. REINFELDS, Governor’s Bay. August 29, 1980.
