Spurred to stand
Sir, — In : previous correspondence to your column (Feb-March 1980) I have exhorted Kaiapoi ’ residents to
express their indignation at the ballot, box in October. Consequently, I was heartened by the timely encouragement given to electors in my own area, the Golden Groves subdivision of Kaiapoi, by Cl W. D. Hodgson, a former Town Clerk of Kaiapoi (August 30). It is all- too easy to be negative and destructive as your, cor- . respondents frequently illustrate. As , a result of the encouragement given by Mr Hodgson I wish to announce that I. will be standing as an independent candidate at the forthcoming’ i elections. . I would urge all interested, regardless of local government area, to contemplate similar action before the closing date for nominations, mid-
day Friday,. September 5. Such competition can only strengthen a democracy and improve the calibre of all councillors and ultimately their respective councils. — Yours, etc, . PHILIP I. REDMOND. August 30, 1980. .
