Rodeo animals

Sir, — As a director of the board of the New Zealand Rodeo Association, I reply to comments printed on the. TV pages of . “The Press” on August 22 and 25.' Mr Neil Wells, of the S.P.C.A., asked if rodeo is entertainment. A s 140,000 people paid to. see the action at 32 approved rodeos last year, one must assume that it does .entertain. All N.Z.R.A. rodeos must abide by a strict set. of rules which cover treatment' of stock. S.P.C.A. officers are welcome to inspect these at any time. If any animal is marked -by spurs the cowboy concerned would be disciplined by the board; Horses and bulls are only bucked for eight seconds, assuming the cowboy stays on, and the most times any animal would be bucked out would be six to eight times a year. Time-event steers for steer wrestling - are usually about 6001 b in weight. Understandably it is the 1601 b cowboy who finishes up the worse for wear. .— Yours, etc, D. C. STRINGER,. Publicity Officer, N.Z. Rodeo Association. August 30, 1980. ’
