Takahe on display
People will have a rare chance to view the almost-extmct takahe during its breeding season later this year at the Mount Bruce native-birds reserve 24km north of Masterton. The takahe and other birds will be able to be observed from December 15, a month earlier than usual. . A special breeding enclosure was opened recently for a pair of takahe which themselves have been bred at Mount .Bruce. Birds bred at the reserve will be released on predator-free islands. It is believed only about 250 takahe are left.
